Short Grass (1950)

In the untamed frontier of New Mexico, on the brink of a new era shaped by the incoming railroad, law, and commerce, drifts in Steve Lewellyn (Rod Cameron), a wandering cowboy. In this wild land, where the flash of a gun often settles disputes over grazing rights, he becomes an unwitting pawn in a saloon heist. A deadly encounter forces him to slay the robber in a desperate act of self-preservation. Wounded, he escapes with the stolen money, only to be saved by the virtuous Sharon Lynch (Cathy Downs), the daughter of an upstanding rancher. In gratitude, Steve gives the money to her father, Pete Lynch (Stanley Andrews), enabling him to purchase valuable short-grass acreage. This selfless act seals a partnership between them, but it's short-lived, as Steve finds himself fleeing the territory after another violent encounter sees him kill a neighboring rancher's brother in self-defense. After five years in exile, Steve returns, only to find Sharon and the other honest townsfolk under the thumb of the vindictive rancher, still nursing a grudge against him. Swept up in a whirlwind of past grudges and present injustices, Steve must navigate this rugged landscape where old feuds die hard, and the glint of a gun still rules the short grass plains.
