Plot

In the bustling heart of Washington D.C., the year is 1998, and a young prodigy named Stephen Glass has taken the political journalism world by storm. At just 25, he is the youngest among the fifteen distinguished writers and editors at The New Republic, a modestly circulated yet highly acclaimed political commentary magazine renowned among influential figures, even the President. Glass, a wunderkind, is admired for his seemingly innocent charm, captivating storytelling, and an uncanny knack for being at the ideal place at the right time to unearth intriguing stories. Despite being deeply engrossed in law school at Georgetown, Glass manages to maintain an impressive work ethic. His colleagues respect him, finding his humility endearing, and his creative narratives captivating. However, this admiration is not extended to the magazine's newly promoted editor-in-chief, Charles Lane, whose ascension is seen as a betrayal against the unanimously respected former editor, Michael Kelly. Every story published in the magazine undergoes meticulous fact-checking to uphold accuracy and journalistic integrity. But when Glass's latest tale is scrutinized by the sharp-eyed journalists at Forbes online magazine, things start to unravel. They find inconsistencies that cannot be independently verified beyond the evidence provided by Glass to the New Republic's fact-checkers. As Glass's glittering facade begins to crumble, he stubbornly defends his work, producing questionable "proof" to back up his sources. Meanwhile, Lane is caught in a dilemma of how far to go to protect his writer, Glass, as the latter gets entangled in a spiraling web of lies. Shattered Glass is the riveting true story of a fraudulent rising star in journalism, who, in a desperate quest for fame, forged sources, quotes, and even entire stories. But even the most elaborate deceptions cannot go unnoticed forever, and soon, Glass's world begins to crumble, revealing the unforgiving truth beneath the shattered pieces of his credibility.
