Plot

In the vibrant world of Parisian ballet, Pete P. Peters, an American dancer known as Petrov, is captivated by photographs of musical revue star, Linda Keene. Despite his heart belonging to jazz dancing, he promises his impresario, Jeffrey Baird, that he will meet and marry the seemingly unattainable Linda. When Pete finally encounters Linda, he masks his fascination with a thick Russian accent, adopting the persona of Petrov, the temperamental ballet virtuoso, and feigns indifference towards her. Crafting an elaborate ruse to escape the relentless pursuits of Lady Tarrington, a former ballerina infatuated with him, Pete manipulates Jeffrey into booking him on a New York-bound liner, the same ship on which Linda is sailing. Aboard the ship, he ingeniously orchestrates daily encounters with Linda, gradually earning her affection. But as rumors of Pete's "secret marriage" circulate, Linda is mistaken for Pete's wife, and even rumored to be pregnant, sparking a whirlwind of gossip and scandal. Furious at the misunderstanding, Linda escapes to New York, seeking solace with her bewildered fiancé, Jim Montgomery. However, a cunning plan by her producer, Arthur Miller, who fears losing her to marriage, thrusts her into an impromptu dance with Pete, followed by a scandalous photograph that suggests they are married. This publicity stunt forces the pair to elope to New Jersey, where Linda reluctantly agrees to marry Pete, with the intention of an immediate divorce. As Linda starts to admit her love for Pete, a misunderstanding involving Lady Tarrington provokes Linda to initiate divorce proceedings. The scandal causes Pete to lose his prestigious engagement with the Metropolitan Ballet Company. With his career hanging by a thread and Linda's absence weighing heavily on him, Pete is offered a lifeline when Arthur proposes to feature him in his upcoming musical revue. On opening night, Linda arrives with divorce papers in hand, but is moved by a performance where every dancer dons a mask of her face. Her anger dissolves as she joins the dance, reuniting on stage with a jubilant Pete. An intoxicating tale of love, deception, and dance, 'Shall We Dance' (1937) waltzes viewers through a whirlwind of emotion, humor, and captivating performances.
