Sara's Notebook (2018)

In the bustling heart of Madrid, Laura Alonso, a tenacious Spanish lawyer, stumbles upon a photograph that rekindles hope; her younger sister Sara, presumed dead for two years, might be alive in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Driven by sisterly love and a burning determination, Laura plunges into the political maelstrom of central Africa, navigating the troubled waters of Goma, an area plagued by warlords and their ruthless battles over the precious mineral, coltan. Unfamiliar with the country's language and the lurking dangers, Laura aligns with Sergio Rojas, a Latin businessman, hoping to pave her way to Goma. But as she unravels Sergio's sinister motives, she finds an unlikely ally in Sven, Sara's former lover, and Jamir, a young ex-child soldier with a clouded past. Despite his initial hesitation, Jamir decides to aid Laura in her mission, thus commencing a perilous journey from Uganda to Goma via Rwanda, across the peril-strewn border of eastern DR Congo. As they traverse through this treacherous landscape, Laura finds herself not only grappling with life-threatening situations but also wrestling with an unforgiving reality where human life is disposable, and death lurks around every corner. This harsh truth threatens to shatter Laura's spirit and sanity, a situation that further spirals into chaos upon discovering Jamir's concealed past. The final blow comes when Laura unearths the complex circumstances surrounding Sara, complicating her rescue and pushing Laura to the edge of despair. Will she be able to overcome these overwhelming odds, or will her quest lead her into an abyss from which there is no return?
