Sam Whiskey (1969)

In the unsettled aftermath of the Civil War, Sam Whiskey (Burt Reynolds), a gambler with a talent for the extraordinary, is lured from his cards by the enchanting widow, Laura Breckenridge (Angie Dickinson). She presents him with a tantalizing task: to salvage a fortune in gold bars, an ill-gotten treasure her late husband pilfered, now lying dormant in a sunken riverboat in the River Platte, Colorado. This treasure must surreptitiously find its way back to the Denver Mint before its absence is noted, or the Breckenridge name will be irrevocably tarnished. Enticed by the promise of $20,000, Sam assembles a motley crew, enlisting a local blacksmith and a comrade from the war. Unbeknownst to them, the shadow of an outlaw trails their every move, his eyes glinting with greed for the submerged gold. Equipped with a makeshift diving helmet, Sam plunges into the river's depths, embarking on a daring underwater heist. Yet in the euphoria of their successful retrieval, the gold is snatched away by the lurking outlaw. Using an arsenal of inventive weaponry, Sam reclaims the stolen loot and returns to Denver, where he ingeniously poses as a government inspector. As part of his ruse, he damages a bust of George Washington and insists on having it repaired. In the secrecy of his blacksmith friend's forge, they recast the gold into the shape of the bronze bust. When the relentless outlaw Rick Davis finally catches up with the trio, he mistakenly pilfers the original bust, leaving the golden replica intact. With the path clear, Sam and his team infiltrate the mint, transforming the bust back into gold bars. As dawn breaks over Denver, Laura rewards the men with the agreed $20,000, and Sam, with something priceless - her heart.
