Run Boy Run (2013)

Set against the bleak backdrop of World War II, "Run Boy Run" tells the gripping tale of Srulik Fridman, a nine-year-old Jewish boy in a Polish village. Separated from his family amidst the chaos of the Warsaw ghetto, Srulik flees into the forest and the farmlands. His survival becomes a solitary challenge, a dance with danger that sees him subsist on the wilderness, daily chores, and petty theft. When Srulik joins a group of orphaned children, their fates diverge, and a chance adoption by a farmer is short-lived; a friend's discovery of his circumcision marks him for danger, forcing him to run again before the Nazis arrive. The harsh winter brings him to the doorstep of Magda Janczyk, a Partisan wife and mother, who nurtures him back to health and teaches him to assume the identity of Jurek Staniak, a Catholic orphan. Srulik's journey is fraught with peril as he continuously evades Nazi threats. He escapes from the hands of those willing to betray him for bounty and finds temporary refuge on the estate of a German widow, Hermann, where the games-addicted Commanding Officer takes a liking to him. When foreman Pawel takes him under his wing, a horrifying accident shatters the fragile peace, revealing Srulik's secret and forcing him to flee once more into the coldest winter of the war. As the resilient young Jurek, Srulik finds a semblance of family with the Kowalskis, even as the Russians approach their area. Yet, the bitter sting of betrayal awaits him again, as a Jewish orphanage representative insists on bringing him back to his people and faith. "Run Boy Run" traces the harrowing yet inspiring journey of a boy who, against all odds, fights to survive, his spirit unbroken, his hope unquenched.
