Plot
In the heart of the 70's, amidst the serene German countryside, a tale of faith, fear and friendship unfolds. The protagonist, Michaela Klingler, a young epileptic woman, dares to defy her devout mother, Marianne, by enrolling in a pedagogy course at the University. Her supportive father, Karl Klingler, offers her a chance at independence by securing a place for her in a sorority house in Tübingen.
As Michaela navigates university life, she reconnects with a former high school companion, Hanna Imhof. Hanna’s concern for Michaela’s health propels her to insist on seeking medical assistance. However, when a severe episode shakes Michaela to her core, she abandons her medication, convinced that demonic possession is the culprit behind her deteriorating health.
In a desperate attempt to save herself, Michaela turns to priest Martin Borchert, a firm believer in the power of exorcism. Meanwhile, the modern-minded priest Gerhard Landauer advocates for a more scientific approach, urging her to consult a psychologist. The film paints a haunting picture of a woman caught between the crossroads of tradition and modernity, faith and science, with her sanity hanging in the balance.
