In the year 1974, Eddie Dunford, a young reporter fresh from Southern England, finds himself ensnared in the tangled web of Yorkshire's darkest mysteries upon his return home. Landing a role at the Yorkshire Post, he is immediately thrust into an unsettling case - a young schoolgirl has vanished, and Eddie senses a sinister pattern, linking this disappearance to a string of unsolved crimes from the past six years. The local police, however, dismiss his theories, pointing fingers at the gypsy community. Undeterred, Eddie delves deeper into the case, only to be met with hostility and physical aggression from the police, following a poignant visit to a grieving mother whose daughter has been missing for years. The discovery of a child's body at the construction site of local tycoon John Dawson provides another grim piece to the puzzle. As Eddie navigates the labyrinth of deceit, he embarks on a forbidden affair with Paula, the aforementioned bereaved mother, and grows increasingly suspicious of a conspiracy involving Dawson, the police, and possibly even his own newspaper. But the real question remains - just what horrifying truth are they trying desperately to conceal?
