Plot

In "Queen & Country," a vibrant follow-up to the Oscar-nominated "Hope and Glory" (1987), we once again meet Bill Rohan, who as a young boy reveled in the unexpected liberation when his school was obliterated by a stray Luftwaffe bomb. Now a decade later, Bill (Callum Turner), serving as director John Boorman's engaging alter-ego, finds himself navigating the rigorous currents of basic training amidst the tense backdrop of the Korean War. Drafted into the labyrinth of military life, Bill is not alone. Percy (Caleb Landry Jones), his eccentric and rebellious companion, stands by his side as they both wage a humorous yet relentless war of wits against their superiors. Their primary adversary is the endlessly frustrated Sergeant Major Bradley (David Thewlis), a character as absurdly paradoxical as those found in the pages of Catch-22. Above Bradley looms the beleaguered, aptly named Major Cross, portrayed by the inimitable Richard E. Grant, who struggles to maintain an air of authority amidst the chaos. Despite the foreign war, the real battlefield for Bill and Percy lies within the confines of their base and the nearby town. Their quests for love and their battles against the pompous military hierarchy intertwine, creating a tapestry of youthful rebellion, camaraderie, and the quest for individual identity. "Queen & Country" thus emerges as a stirring coming-of-age tale, painted against the backdrop of a world struggling to find its own peace and identity in the aftermath of a global war.
