Plot

In the rugged folds of the Andes lies Tecala, a country held hostage by its own elements and a playground for opportunistic enterprises. Alice and Peter Bowman, American humanitarians, find themselves caught in a web of deceit and danger spun by QUAD Carbon, an oil company masquerading a dam project as a cover for their true oil pipeline ambitions. Their marriage, already strained from the harsh realities of their environment and the ghost of a recent miscarriage, faces the ultimate test when Peter, an engineer, is kidnapped by the Liberation Army of Tecala (ELT). Once a political force, ELT has devolved into a ruthless gang, funding their operations through kidnappings and drug trafficking. As a valuable asset of QUAD Carbon, Peter's abduction prompts the dispatch of Terry Thorne, a seasoned Australian-British negotiator from Luthan Risk International, known in hushed whispers as the best in the business. Thorne's arrival triggers a tense race against time, as QUAD Carbon's shaky financial situation threatens to cut short any efforts to rescue Peter. Alice, torn between trusting the expertise of the distant but capable Thorne and the seemingly promising actions of the local agents, is pulled into a whirlwind of decisions and dilemmas. The constant beacon guiding their actions is the desperate need for proof that Peter is still alive. Amidst the chaos, an underlying current of attraction develops between Alice and Terry, further complicating their resolve. The situation takes a sharp turn when the political climate shifts, forcing Thorne to adapt his strategy and question his loyalties. Chained high in the mountains, Peter clings to life, his spirit tethered to the world by a single photo of Alice. As Alice and Terry grapple with their growing feelings, they must decide what they're willing to risk for Peter's life, and what it means for their own. Proof of Life paints a gripping portrait of love, betrayal, and survival in a world where the lines between right and wrong blur, and where life hangs by the slender thread of hope.
