Plot

In the bustling heart of New York City, the lives of Jan Morrow, a talented interior designer, and Brad Allen, a charming songwriter, intertwine through a shared telephone party line. Jan, who is waiting for Mr. Right, finds herself perpetually frustrated by Brad's incessant phone flirting with a myriad of unsuspecting women, each wooed by the same original song, personalized only by the change of name. Brad is equally irked by Jan's interference, attributing her annoyance to repressed desires. While they detest each other's voices over the phone line, destiny has a twist in store when they meet face to face. Attracted to her, Brad recognizes Jan, but she remains oblivious to his identity. Seizing the opportunity, he introduces himself as a gallant Texan, Rex Stetson, keeping his actual identity under wraps. This deception allows him to woo her while also teasing her over the telephone about her romantic escapades, which he now has insider knowledge of. His ploy works, and Jan finds herself falling for Rex, completely unaware of his dual identity. Adding to the intricate web of relationships is wealthy Jonathan Forbes, a client of Jan and a dear friend of Brad. He harbors unrequited feelings for Jan, oblivious to her budding romance with his best friend disguised as a Texan. Meanwhile, Brad, commissioned by Jonathan to create songs for a Broadway show, becomes entwined in a love triangle he unwittingly helped create. The plot thickens when Jonathan, suspecting something amiss, hires a private investigator to unmask the mysterious Rex Stetson. Meanwhile, Jan's alcoholic housekeeper Alma, an avid eavesdropper and Brad's biggest fan, might be the wild card they need to untangle this complicated situation. In this captivating tale of mistaken identity, love, and friendship, the audience is taken on a whirlwind journey through the complexities of human relationships set against the vibrant backdrop of 1950s New York.
