Plot

In the heart of San Francisco, Amy Brower, a captivating late twenty-something housewife, finds her world shattered when her husband, college professor James Brower, announces his desire for a divorce and vacates their home without hesitation. The unexpected departure leaves Amy, who is still profoundly in love with James, grappling with the harsh reality of his absence and a longing for his return. Despite being a college graduate, Amy is ill-prepared for life on her own, having lacked the need for marketable job skills within the confines of her marriage. She now faces the daunting task of navigating through her new solo existence, one that is marred by societal perceptions of her as an attractive, young, and vulnerable woman. Her maiden voyage into the world of independence is further complicated as she stumbles upon unsettling revelations of her husband's infidelity, forcing her to confront the end of her marriage. In her struggle, Amy finds unlikely allies: Gert Meredith, the head of the Divorcées' League of Marin County with a cynical outlook on life; Joseph Provo, a wise, elderly widower who runs the local grocery store, offering a unique perspective on life post-marriage; and Madge Frazier, her well-meaning best friend, aiming to introduce her to potential suitors. One such prospect is Howard Carpenter, a charming computer analyst visiting from New York, who enters Amy's life unexpectedly. However, before Amy can open a new chapter, be it with Howard or on her own, she must confront the legal and emotional aftermath of her divorce, and grapple with the painful notion that James no longer desires to be with her. It is through this tumultuous journey that Amy eventually discovers not just the strength within herself, but also what truly matters in life. One Is a Lonely Number is a poignant exploration of love, loss, self-discovery, and the indomitable human spirit.
