Observe and Report (2009)

Ronnie Barnhardt, a man who lives in a grandiose illusion of his mundane life, is the head of the security team at Forest Ridge Mall. His world is framed by his self-perceived proficiency at his job, a job he believes would be better accomplished with firearms, and his unrequited love for Brandi, the glamorous but oblivious blonde at the mall's cosmetics counter. Despite his overbearing mother's unsavory comments and his bipolar diagnosis, Ronnie remains steadfast, basking in his self-created glory. His world orbits around his chaotic home, where he still resides with his perpetually intoxicated mother who, despite her crude remarks, shares a bond of love with him. The specter of an absent father, blamed on Ronnie by his mother, haunts the corners of his life. His existence is further complicated by his attraction towards Brandi, who remains blissfully ignorant of his affections, and his dismissive attitude towards Nell, the sweet donut-shop worker who genuinely cares for him. However, the dull monotony of his life is disrupted when a serial flasher begins terrorizing the parking lot, and a string of thefts plague the mall. Ronnie views these incidents as his chance to prove his worth, but his investigative skills are as fabricated as his inflated ego. His approach is riddled with baseless accusations and crude stereotypes, further straining his relationship with the city’s police force, particularly Detective Harrison, who is assigned to the mall's cases. In a world where he's constantly belittled and misunderstood, Ronnie sees Harrison as his nemesis, an adversary who belittles his capabilities and hinders his pursuit of justice. As Ronnie’s delusions begin to crumble, he must navigate the harsh realities of his life and confront his own inadequacies. Will Ronnie manage to retain his self-perceived hero status, or will the stark reality of his life finally shatter his carefully constructed illusion? Will there be a chance for redemption, or will his inflated self-image prove to be his downfall? The course of events will unravel the true essence of Ronnie's existence, revealing the man behind the illusion.
