Plot

In the whirlwind of adolescence, 14-year-old Tania's world is abruptly forced into maturity as she navigates both the budding interest of boys at school and the stark reality of her mother's breast cancer diagnosis. Until this point, Tania's life had been a carefree mosaic of school, trivial squabbles with her mother, Cathy, and the typical trials of teenagehood. However, the revelation of her mother's disease casts a heavy shadow over her innocent days, turning her world upside down. For some time, Cathy had been evading something, and Tania, suspecting an affair, remained oblivious to the truth her mother couldn't bear to confess. How could Cathy reveal her battle with cancer to her free-spirited daughter, always pushing against her boundaries? The impending disclosure weighs heavily on Cathy, creating a silent tension between them. Once the truth is unveiled, it is met with a surprising determination from Tania. She transforms into a tenacious little soldier, armed with humour, audacity, and an unyielding zest for life. She is resolved to help her mother conquer the disease and its trials - the grueling treatment, the physical deterioration, the hair loss, and the suffocating pity from others. In her bid to uplift her mother's spirits, Tania even extends an olive branch to her detested PE teacher, who seems to hold an unexpected interest in Cathy. However, plagued by her physical changes and feeling diminished, Cathy struggles to accept the possibility of love. Meanwhile, Tania grapples with her own burgeoning femininity and the awkward romantic overtures from a male classmate. In the face of adversity, the once strained relationship between mother and daughter evolves into an unbreakable bond. Through this poignant journey, 'My Mum, Cancer and Me' unravels an inspiring tale of resilience, love, and the power of human spirit, demonstrating the lengths to which we will go to protect those we love.
