Plot

In the seedy underbelly of Toronto during the early 1970s, Patrick Kelly, a chameleon-like undercover agent of the RCMP's drug squad, navigates the treacherous waters of crime and deception. With the ability to manipulate his emotional façade at will, Kelly exudes a magnetic charisma that bends others to his will. Despite a modest salary, he lives a life of opulence, indulging in lucrative antique dealings, questionable loans from a childhood friend, Albert Malinson, and a suspiciously generous insurance payout after a devastating house fire destroys his priceless collection. The fire, however, flickers doubt in the minds of authorities, straining Kelly's relationship with them and leading to his resignation. But life takes a shocking turn when his vivacious French wife, Marie, meets a tragic end, falling from the balcony of their extravagant downtown apartment. Their turbulent relationship, marked by Kelly's numerous affairs, raises eyebrows, particularly when he hastily ties the knot with Linda Martin, one of his mistresses. Accusations buzz around Kelly like a swarm of bees, alleging him of orchestrating Marie's deadly fall. Despite his vehement claims of innocence, the authorities relentlessly untangle the web of his convoluted life, both before and after Marie's demise, to expose his potential guilt. Yet, their efforts seem to yield only circumstantial evidence. In 1981, the enigmatic Kelly is finally accused of his wife's murder and despite evading justice initially, he is convicted three years later based on the testimony of a crucial witness. This conviction, however, is thrown into disarray when, a decade later, the same witness shockingly recants her testimony. The film "Murder Most Likely" chronicles this enthralling saga, presenting a thrilling blend of deceit, desire, and the desperate pursuit of justice.
