Plot

In the shadowy corridors of a mental institution, a devout group of Catholics, led by the ailing Father Lareaux (Sir John Hurt), attempt an exorcism on the convicted murderer George Viznik (Brad Greenquist). Among them is Maya Larkin (Winona Ryder), a teacher marked by her own past possession and exorcism. The ceremony, however, spirals into chaos, leaving Father Lareaux comatose and the group grappling with Viznik's cryptic writings. In the coded scribbles, Maya discerns a chilling prophecy: Satan intends to incarnate as a man, mirroring the divine incarnation of God in Jesus. Her eyes fall upon Peter Kelson (Ben Chaplin), a writer engrossed in the dark world of serial killers, as the potential vessel for this diabolic transformation. Despite the gravity of her revelation, Peter, an atheist raised by his pious Uncle James (Philip Baker Hall), dismisses Maya's warnings as the ramblings of a superstitious mind. Yet, as unsettling occurrences begin to seep into Peter's life, he finds himself drawn to the resilient Maya. Together, they embark on a journey that weaves through a labyrinth of eerie events, self-discovery, and the looming threat of an ultimate showdown. As they delve deeper into the mystery, Peter must confront the possibility of Evil incarnate, challenging his disbeliefs and potentially grappling with the fate of his soul. Lost Souls (2000) is a chilling narrative that entwines faith, evil, and the resilience of the human spirit, inviting viewers into a suspenseful exploration of the supernatural and the power of belief.
