In the bustling heart of the newspaper world, Warren Haggerty, the managing editor of the New York Evening Star, finds himself tangled in a web of personal and professional challenges. With his bride-to-be, the fiery divorcée Gladys Benton, growing increasingly frustrated by their repeatedly postponed wedding, a fresh crisis hits in the form of a $5 million libel lawsuit. The plaintiff is the affluent socialite Connie Allenbury, whose reputation as a playgirl has been tarnished by an erroneous story published by Haggerty's newspaper, claiming she wrecked a marriage. Amidst the looming threat of financial ruin that would devastate the newspaper if Connie wins, Haggerty seeks the help of Bill Chandler, a shrewdly crafty ex-reporter with an unscrupulous edge. Despite their tumultuous past, Chandler agrees to assist in exchange for a hefty sum to alleviate his own financial predicament.
