Plot

In the rugged expanse of Bitter Creek Valley, a spirited young cowboy known as "Chip" Douglas Jr. finds himself in the midst of a violent power struggle. As one of the Circle Bar cowhands, a rowdy group infamous for their wild antics, Chip's reputation is colored with shades of lawlessness. The Circle Bar's owner, the ruthless Slade Henaberry, relishes their notoriety. With the help of his gang, including the hardened outlaws Tascosa, Mason, and Kirby, Henaberry expands his empire through cattle rustling and the cold-blooded removal of the valley's small cattlemen and nesters. When General Lew Wallace takes control of the Territory of New Mexico, he attempts to tame the rampant lawlessness but is denied Federal aid. In his search for a capable sheriff to replace the feeble Sheriff Spence, he crosses paths with the fiery saloon and hotel owner, "Cattle Kate" Turner. Kate, expecting a visit from her daughter, Louise, recruits Chip to create a semblance of respectability in her establishment. During this endeavor, Chip meets the sassy and spirited Louise, sparking an unexpected chain of events. Meanwhile, John Douglas Sr., Chip's father, is shot by Henaberry's men in a desperate attempt to protect his cattle from being stolen. This brutal act turns the tides for Chip, leading him to abandon his wild ways and embrace the mantle of law and order. Based on Kate's recommendation, Wallace appoints Chip as the new sheriff. Despite winning early battles against Tascosa and his men, Chip soon falls into their clutches. Rescue comes in the form of Chip's loyal friends, Dave Massey and "Bandy" Malarkey. Remaining undercover at the Circle Bar to uncover Henaberry's operations, they liberate Chip and are subsequently deputized. Together, they rally a posse of beleaguered nesters, riding with renewed purpose towards San Luis Pass, and into the heart of a brewing range war. As the lawlessness escalates, Chip must confront the ghosts of his past and the brutal reality of his present, in a bid to bring peace to the tumultuous Bitter Creek Valley.
