Nestled in the pastoral splendor near Portland, Widow Walters and her daughter Ethel lead a quiet existence, their affectionate bond undisturbed. Their tranquility is disrupted when Squire Lang, a rotund widower, and his son Harry move to the neighboring farm. A spark ignites between the young Harry and Ethel, their attraction irresistible despite their parents' insistence on chores over courtship.
Simultaneously, Squire Lang finds himself smitten by Widow Walters. However, his heart's pursuit is complicated by Bart Cullum, a wealthy farmer rival with his own designs on the widow. Amidst this tangled web of emotions, Cornelia Bloodgood, a plain spinster with a need for an ear trumpet, futilely attempts to capture Bart's attention.
As the moon bathes the land in a silvery glow, the old-fashioned husking bee hosted by Uncle Dick, the local fiddler, becomes the battleground for the squire and Bart's rivalry. Bart, finding a red ear of corn, seizes the chance to kiss the widow and selects her as his dancing partner, leaving the squire to dance with Cornelia.
When the dance ends, Uncle Dick spins eerie ghost tales, leaving Widow Walters fearful of her solitary journey home. Bart volunteers to accompany her, but the squire, driven by cunning and jealousy, devises a plan to test his rival's courage. Donning a sheet and hiding behind a towering oak tree, he emerges like a specter, sending Bart fleeing in terror and leaving the widow to faint into the squire's arms.
Capitalizing on Bart's cowardice, the squire promptly proposes to the Widow Walters the following day, securing her acceptance. Simultaneously, Harry and Ethel solidify their own budding romance with a proposal. As the old and young couples cross paths, their joyous announcements create a harmonious and unexpected reunion, sealing the story of love, rivalry, and mischief among these 'Just Maine Folks'.
