Plot

In the deep throes of the Nazi occupation, we find our protagonist Joanna (Urszula Grabowska), a woman enveloped in desolation as she waits for a letter from her husband, imprisoned in an Oflag. Her world, already teetering on the edges of despair, becomes more precarious as she takes the risky decision of providing refuge to a young Jewish girl, Rose, after her mother is seized in a brutal roundup. This act of compassion spirals Joanna into a world of secrets and deceptions, a burden too heavy to share with her own kin. She stands at the crossroads of survival and morality, aware that her house is under watchful eyes, and a safe haven for Rose is beyond her reach. With no other options left, Joanna is driven into the arms of a German officer, bartering love for protection, a move that paints her as a traitor among her own people. The movie unravels to a poignant climax, a symbolic tableau akin to the agony of Golgotha, painting Joanna's ordeal of sheltering Rose as her personal crucifixion. However, the narrative takes a bitter turn as it subtly unveils a perverse reality - the danger wasn't just the enemy outside, but the watchful eyes of her "own people", scrutinizing her actions through the prism of patriotic decency. An engaging tale of sacrifice, "Joanna" is a gripping exploration of the human spirit in the face of terrifying adversity.
