Plot

Igby Goes Down is an intriguing narrative that weaves the tale of a 17-year-old misfit, Jason "Igby" Slocumb Jr. Born into east-coast old money, he finds himself in a family overshadowed by mental illness and self-absorption. His father, diagnosed with schizophrenia, resides in a Maryland psychiatric institution while his mother, Mimi, focused on her own world, is battling cancer. Living in the shadow of his older brother Ollie, a budding economist at Columbia, Igby grapples with his rebellious spirit against their privileged lifestyle, seeing Ollie as a fascist in the making. Having been expelled from a series of prep schools, including a military academy, Igby's summer is set to be spent in New York under Ollie's watchful eye. He's tasked with renovating properties for their godfather, D.H. Banes, who has stepped into the absent father figure role. However, Igby's rebellious nature leads him to seek refuge in the company of Rachel, D.H.'s heroin-addict mistress, and Sookie, an older waitress he finds himself falling for. Igby's intellectualism and high expectations for the world around him paint him as a modern-day Holden Caulfield. This summer of rebellion, relationships, and reality checks pushes him to confront the future his family has mapped out for him. As he navigates through romantic complications and the aftermath of a mission with his brother, Igby finds himself facing a stark realization of what his immediate future holds. This personal tale explores how Igby copes with the harsh realities of his life while challenging the high standards of the world he was born into.
