In the bustling heart of Chicago, James, a 39-year-old Second City performer, grapples with life's low blows. Overweight and still living under his mother's roof, he finds his personal and professional life teetering on the edge. His love interest discards him, closely followed by his agent, who also happens to be her sibling. Amidst this turmoil, James rejects melancholy-inducing local TV roles, yearning for more meaningful work. His world takes another hit when his beloved movie, "Marty," is set for a remake. Despite his intense love for the film and a longing to audition, he's left on the sidelines. A disheartening speech at a grade school career day triggers a minor breakdown. However, a silver lining emerges in the form of Beth, an eccentric woman he encounters at an ice cream shop. The plot thickens as James faces the challenge of carving out a successful career, breaking free from his mother's shadow, and finding a companion to share his love for cheese.
