Hornblower: Retribution (2001)

In the sweltering heat of Jamaica, the heroic Horatio Hornblower, along with his comrades, find themselves shackled by the heavy chains of accusation, facing trial for the audacious act of relieving their Captain, the revered James Sawyer, of his command over the famed HMS Renown. The court is presided over by a trio of judges, among them, the stern Sir Edward Pellew. It's not long before Hornblower realizes that the judges seem to be more invested in preserving the illustrious reputation of the Service and Captain Sawyer, rather than unearthing the truth. Amidst the stifling courtroom drama, the plot delves into the past, unveiling the suspenseful events that followed Sawyer's removal. With the inexperienced 1st Lt. Buckland at the helm, the crew of the Renown daringly decides to assault a Spanish stronghold rather than sailing straight back to Jamaica. A display of valour unfolds, yet Buckland's shaky command threatens to sink their success as he recklessly decides to transport Spanish prisoners back to Kingston. All the while, Hornblower, Kennedy, and Bush, despite the looming shadow of their court martial, persuade a wavering Buckland to surprise the Spanish fortress at Santo Domingo before returning to Jamaica. However, the situation spirals into chaos as Buckland's incompetence incites the wrath of local rebels, who now see them as foes as well. The plot thickens with Captain Sawyer's mounting paranoia, the desertion of seamen, Buckland's escalating envy of Hornblower, and Spanish treachery, all weaving a complex web around the already perilous circumstances. "Hornblower: Retribution" is an engrossing tale of courage, ambition, and the relentless pursuit of justice amidst the thunder of cannons and the treacherous tides of the sea.
