Plot

In the heart of the Navy, three unlikely comrades – Chief Petty Officer William Clark, and seamen Rico Ferrari and Danny Smith – have bonded over shared follies and the unpredictable waves of life at sea. Setting foot in San Francisco during a 48-hour liberty, each man harbors dreams of freedom, only to be met with unforeseen difficulties that threaten to capsize their hopes. William, long engaged to Ginger, a vivacious showgirl, faces a romantic storm when she accuses him of using his naval duties as an excuse to avoid marriage. A life-altering development sees her leave him for a civilian, sending ripples through his world. Rico, meanwhile, unexpectedly becomes an obstacle to his mother's impending nuptials. The most clandestine among them, Danny, hides the fact that his father is a celebrated navy rear admiral, anxious to avoid any insinuations of privilege. The real tempest brews when Danny's innocuous sister Susan is lured by the promise of stardom by the charismatic showman Wendell Craig. Offering her a part in his navy-themed spectacle "Hit the Deck", his intentions seem far from honorable, igniting Danny's protective instincts. Despite their personal predicaments, the trio pledge to support each other, slaloming through a series of comic misadventures, primarily in their quest to guard Susan's innocence. However, their actions risk attracting the naval shore patrol’s attention, potentially causing a colossal wave in Rear Admiral Smith's otherwise calm sea. Amidst the chaos, a flicker of romance may spark between Rico and Susan, and possibly Danny and Carol, one of Wendell’s performers, if only their misunderstandings can be cleared. From hotel suite debacles to landing in the brig, these three sailors embark on a hilarious, heartwarming voyage of friendship, love, and duty, where the only predictable course is the promise of the unpredictable.
