In the gritty heart of life's turmoil, we meet Bernie LaPlante, a man of questionable morals, cornered by life's cruel circumstances. A gruff hustler and a regular in the criminal courts, Bernie finds his access to his son, the only light in his dim world, restricted by his exasperated ex-wife. But fate, often a trickster, has a peculiar twist in store for him as he is inadvertently thrown into a scene of chaos and catastrophe. While en route to his son's birthday, Bernie becomes a reluctant hero when a plane crashes near him. Propelled by his opportunistic instincts, he boards the wreckage not to play the savior, but to pilfer what he can.
