Plot

Hearts in Atlantis is a tender journey into the past, as seen through the eyes of an older man, David Morse, who returns to his hometown following the loss of his cherished friend. As he steps foot onto the familiar grounds, a cascade of memories engulfs him, transporting us back to a pivotal summer when he was just eleven years old. At the heart of the story are three children, Bobby Garfield (Anton Yelchin), Carol Gerber (Mika Boorem), and John "Sully" Sullivan (Will Rothhaar). Their lives intertwine in a dance of childhood innocence, marked by a shared kiss between Bobby and Carol that sets the standard for all future romantic encounters. Bobby resides with his mother Liz (Hope Davis), a self-absorbed woman who seeks her own happiness at the expense of her son's. Their mundane lives are upturned with the arrival of enigmatic boarder Ted Brautigan (Sir Anthony Hopkins). Despite Liz's initial suspicion, Ted forms a profound bond with Bobby, revealing hidden abilities and sharing cryptic warnings about the ominous "Low Men" hunting him. Their shared summer unfolds like a reel of magic and mystery, fostering a deep affection between the two. Simultaneously, a dramatic encounter with a schoolyard nemesis alters the course of their lives. Hearts in Atlantis is a film about discovery, friendship, and the transformative power of a single summer that forever changes the course of one boy’s life.
