Plot

In the icy, unforgiving heart of Moscow's winter, a chilling discovery is made in Gorky Park. Three unidentifiable corpses, their faces and fingertips expertly excised, lay hidden beneath the snow. The grim task of investigating this gruesome triple homicide falls on the shoulders of Arkady Renko, Chief Investigator of the Soviet militsiya. Despite his instincts screaming of KGB involvement, a dangerous game, Renko is reluctant to abandon the pursuit of justice. The shadow of the enigmatic Major Pribluda, a figure from Renko's past and a suspected KGB operative, looms heavily over the case. Renko knows that unearthing secrets could paint a target on his back, but an unyielding sense of duty propels him forward. His investigation becomes intertwined with the lives of seemingly unrelated individuals, weaving a complex web of intrigue and danger. Among the key figures is Irina Asanova, a disillusioned seamstress embroiled in the world of Soviet cinema. Her ice skates, reported missing, were found on one of the mutilated victims, a Jane Doe. Their paths cross again at a high-society gathering hosted by Iamskoy, the lead counsel for the case. Iamskoy, a staunch believer in the supremacy of law, insists on Renko being the one to bring the truth to light, even if it means taking on the formidable KGB. At the party, Irina appears on the arm of Jack Osborne, a wealthy American furrier with a frequent presence in the Soviet Union, the only source of coveted sable pelts. Adding another layer to this convoluted puzzle is William Kirwill, a New York City detective, on a desperate search for his missing brother, James. The suspicion dawns that James might be one of the John Does, dragging the case beyond the borders of the Soviet Union. As Renko inches closer to the truth, he becomes ensnared in a sinister conspiracy that reeks of corruption, reaching the highest echelons of Moscow's city government. With no safe haven within the system and escape an impossible dream, Renko must navigate this treacherous maze, where every revelation could be his last. His relentless pursuit of justice in the face of overwhelming odds paints a stark portrait of a man standing against the tide, a beacon of integrity in a world shrouded in shadows.
