Plot

In 1965, an Airman named Adrian Cronauer received orders to be the morning Disc Jockey for the Armed Forces Radio in Saigon. Newly arrived from his previous assignment in Crete, he had the reputation of boosting morale to the troops through humor in his broadcasts. After meeting Sgt Edward Garlick and taken to the radio station, he meets officers Lt Stephen Hauk and Sgt Major Dickerson, who expects Cronauer to follow the program they planed out. However, his humor and musical selections do not sit right with Dickerson or Hauk, even though Cronauer is popular with the troops. While he is off the air and meeting the Vietnamese, he experiences some parts of the war censored on his broadcast.
