Plot

In the bustling heart of Bombay, we find Ram Prasad (Amol Palekar), an ambitious chartered accountant and his sister Ratna, both orphans carving their path in the world. Their ordinary lives take a dramatic twist when Dr. Kedar, an old family friend, introduces Ram Prasad to the eccentric owner of Urmila Trading Corporation, Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt). Bhavani, with his idiosyncratic belief that a man’s character is defined by his mustache and traditional attire, takes a liking to Ram Prasad's oily hair, neatly trimmed mustache, and kurta-pajama ensemble, offering him a lucrative job. Bhavani's peculiarities don’t end there; he insists his employees should have no life beyond work. When the hockey-loving Ram Prasad yearns for a break, he tricks Bhavani, claiming his mother's ill health as an excuse for leave. Fate, however, has a sense of humor and Bhavani ends up at the same hockey match, spotting his supposedly devoted employee in the crowd. Caught red-handed, Ram Prasad spins a web of deception, inventing a clean-shaven, westernized twin brother, Laxman Prasad, who he claims was the one at the match. This 'good-for-nothing' twin, according to Ram Prasad, is a music enthusiast, prompting Bhavani to engage him as a musical tutor for his daughter in a bid to reform him. As the plot thickens, Bhavani's daughter falls head over heels for the charismatic Laxman Prasad, while Bhavani insists on her marrying the traditional Ram Prasad. This rollercoaster of deceptions sets off a series of uproarious complications, involving a fabricated mother and a comically chaotic chase. Set against the backdrop of 1970s Bombay, 'Gol Maal' is a whirlwind of laughter, love, and lies, where one man's attempt to balance a double life leads to an entertaining comedy of errors.
