Free State of Jones (2016)

The amazing true story of Civil War-era farmer Newton Knight who dared to lead a rebellion against the South’s Confederate government deep in the heart of Mississippi slave country. Knight banded together with other farmers who supported the Union. Slaves and numerous Confederate army deserters also joined his effort as they launched an uprising and took command of Jones County, Mississippi. The county was declared a free territory and seceded from the Confederate States of America. Knight continued his advocacy for the civil rights of former slaves after the war and gained the powerful position of U.S. Marshall.
