Fire Down Below (1957)

In the sun-kissed, rum-soaked Caribbean, Tony and Felix, owners of a modest tramp boat, etch out a living transporting goods, mostly within the confines of the law, to the scattered islands. Their lives of sailing and sporadic indulgence are disrupted when they accept a mysterious task: to ferry the enigmatic and beautiful Irena, a redhead without documents hailing from Eastern Europe, to Trinidad, no questions asked. Post World War II, Irena journeyed to the US with an American soldier, only to find herself alone and on the run. While Felix discerns her true nature, Tony is captivated by her allure, falling hard for the fiery redhead. His affection is met with rejection, leading to a rupture in their partnership and a burning desire for vengeance within Tony. In pursuit of retribution, Tony finds himself aboard a merchant ship bound for Trinidad. Fate, however, has a cruel sense of humor. A fog-induced collision leaves him trapped in the ship's hold, surrounded by a cargo of rubber rapidly catching fire. As the clock ticks and the threat of explosion looms ominously, he's faced with a horrifying choice - lose his legs or his life. In a desperate bid to rescue him, the local port doctor solicits the help of Felix and Irena. Tony's survival now rests in the hands of the very people he feels most betrayed by. Will his bitter resentment extinguish any hope of rescue, or will the flames of rivalry be quenched in the face of impending doom?
