Ente Upasana (1984)

In the lush tranquility of her village, Lathika, a vibrant young woman, savors a simple life with her widowed mother, caring cousin Sreekumar, and their close-knit family. Her heart is aflutter with anticipation for her impending marriage to Sreekumar, who is working in the distant Gulf. Their parting, as he leaves for the Gulf, is bittersweet, but Lathika's hopes remain unshaken, her dreams tethered to the day of his return. However, the course of her life takes a nightmarish detour on a rain-drenched day when Arjunan, a trusted family friend's brother, shatters her innocence and leaves her pregnant. Faced with a daunting future and bearing the weight of shame, Lathika relocates to a bustling city, giving birth to a son, Jagadish, away from the prying eyes of her village. Tragically, the shock of her predicament claims her mother's life, furthering Lathika's isolation. Fast forward to the present, where Lathika, now a working single mother, grapples with the past and present as she encounters Arjunan, her boss in the city. Her life is a whirlwind of work and caring for Jagadish, with her best friend her only solace. When Jagadish falls ill, it's Arjunan who steps in, moving him to a private hospital room and bringing along his own mother, a sight that leaves Lathika bewildered and conflicted. In a twist of fate, Sreekumar stumbles upon the truth about Lathika's life post his departure. Incensed, he confronts Arjunan, but is left grappling with his own guilt. In an attempt to mend bridges, he invites Lathika to his wedding, leading her back to her roots and the embrace of her remaining family. In the heart of her old home, Lathika is confronted by Arjunan once more, leading to a resolution that sees them leaving together, stepping into an uncertain future as a family with young Jagadish.
