Plot

In the mirthful yet obscure comedy "Ears" (2016), a man's ordinary life is upended when he awakens one morning to an incessant ringing in his ears. This minor annoyance sets off a chain of peculiar events that force him to confront larger, existential themes, all while he navigates through the absurdity of everyday life. A cryptic note on his fridge reads: 'Your friend Luigi has died. P.S. I took the car', sparking confusion as he struggles to remember who Luigi even is. This peculiar note heralds the start of a day that is anything but ordinary, a day destined to alter the course of his life forever. Director Alessandro Aronadio crafts "Ears" with an unconventional approach, choosing long takes and extended silences over fast-paced dialogue. This cinematic choice amplifies the comedic undertones, creating humour that is heavily reliant on dialogue and the unfolding events rather than merely on comedic situations. The intentionally monochromatic visual palette serves to enhance the raw impact of each scene, focusing the viewer's attention on the expressions, the words, and the intricacies of the characters, freeing them from the distraction of colour. "Ears" emerges as a uniquely oddball comedy within the Italian film industry, thanks in part to the creative freedom provided by its low budget. This film, with its delicate balance of absurdity and profundity, is bound to engage viewers on a deeper level, prompting them to ponder life's larger themes amidst bouts of laughter.
