In the dignified halls of the U.S. Grant Military Academy, a sinister shadow looms when a drowned plebe, David Hand, is discovered on the riverbank, an upperclassman's insignia ominously nearby. The academy’s headmaster, General Hedges, is desperate to shield the institution's reputation from scandal. He dismisses the specter of murder, attributing the death to a mere accident, despite the compelling forensic evidence that points to David's entanglement in a clandestine homosexual relationship before his death. David's letters, seized under the prying eyes of the Army Intelligence Department, implicate Ry Slaight, a first-classman, as the man David was in love with.
