Plot

Florian Amidon, a young and somewhat shy banker, is hardly a commanding figure around women, reserving his confidence for his role as President of the Sabbath Day Society. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when he is assaulted and robbed while embarking on a vacation, only to awaken five years later aboard a Pullman train car. Amidon is stunned by the unaccounted lapse in time and even more so by the flashy attire that now seems to be his own. Upon his arrival at a hotel, he is further baffled when he is welcomed as a longstanding guest. His old friend, Judge Blodgett, appears just as confused as Amidon himself and together they seek answers from a clairvoyant, Madame Leclaire. Under her trance, Amidon transforms into Mr. Brassfield, a character who recalls waking up in the bustling oil town of Bakerstown with no memory of his past. Brassfield, unlike Amidon, is a brash and unscrupulous man who strikes oil, amasses wealth, and is even nominated for mayor. He proves to be a formidable businessman and a ruthless politician, playing with people's lives and hearts with equal abandon. Yet, when the clairvoyant reverts Brassfield back to Amidon, he becomes a savior for the downtrodden, rescuing a poverty-stricken family and mending the broken heart of his sweetheart. As Amidon and the clairvoyant navigate this intricate dance between two polar identities, they aim to blend them into one, retaining the best qualities of each while neutralizing the worst. Double Trouble is an enigmatic tale of one man's journey through time and identity, revealing the remarkable power of the human mind and spirit. The story of Amidon and Brassfield will leave you questioning the boundaries of personality and the transformative potential of circumstances.
