Fleeing the ashes of a civil war raging in Sri Lanka, Dheepan, a hardened Tamil Tiger, seeks refuge from his haunting past. To aid his escape, he forms an unlikely alliance with two strangers - a young woman and a child, crafting an improvised family to bolster his chances of seeking asylum in Europe. Their journey leads them to the heart of Paris, a city filled with promise and uncertainty. They drift from one makeshift home to another, until Dheepan secures a position as the caretaker of a dilapidated housing complex in the city's outskirts. Striving to forge a genuine life for his makeshift family, he tends to his 'wife' and 'daughter' and the crumbling building with equal determination. But the simmering violence in this neglected corner of Paris threatens to shatter their fragile peace. Soon, Dheepan's dormant warrior spirit stirs, reigniting his battle scars. In order to safeguard the two people he yearns to call family, he must once again embrace the instincts he sought to leave behind in the war-torn corners of Sri Lanka.
