In the shadowy heart of the city, Alex, a navy radio specialist on shore leave, awakens from a whiskey-soaked stupor to find himself in possession of a sizable amount of money belonging to Edna Bartelli, a seductive B-girl who lured him home under the guise of a radio repair. Disoriented and guilt-ridden, Alex embarks on a mission to return the cash, reluctantly aided by June Goffe, a world-weary dance hall girl with a heart of gold.
Their quest takes a dark turn when they discover Edna's lifeless body. Besieged by doubt and hazy memories, Alex isn't entirely sure he isn't the murderer. With the clock ticking and dawn breaking in four hours, Alex and June plunge into the city's underbelly to uncover the truth before his leave concludes.
Their journey thrusts them into a grimy whirlwind of sketchy characters, each adding another knot to the increasingly convoluted mystery. As the night unfolds, they must navigate this seedy labyrinth, racing against time to find the real perpetrator and absolve Alex of a crime he may or may not have committed.
