Plot

Simon Bird, notable for his role in The Inbetweeners, leaps into the directorial realm with the heartwarming and cringe-worthy adaptation of Joff Winterhart's graphic novel - Days of the Bagnold Summer (2019). The film is a melodic ode to the tumultuous relationship between Sue Bagnold, a dedicated single librarian, and her Metallica-loving, angst-ridden teenage son, Daniel. The story unfolds when a planned summer escapade to Florida with his dad falls through, leaving Daniel marooned in the suburban world of his mother. The film is buoyed by the supporting performances of Rob Brydon and Alice Lowe, but the spotlight shines brightly on Monica Dolan and Earl Cave. Dolan delivers an empathetic portrayal of the long-suffering Sue, while Cave's Daniel is the quintessential embodiment of teenage rebellion, complete with lank hair and a ghostly pallor. The soundtrack, masterfully crafted by Belle & Sebastian, underscores the narrative, amplifying the humor, charm, and pinpoint accuracy of this beautifully depicted mother-son dynamic. Days of the Bagnold Summer invites you into the awkward dance between parenthood and adolescence, a dance that is as sweet as it is wince-inducing, filled with well-intentioned missteps and the unbreakable ties of familial love.
