In the shadowy realm of love and deceit, we find Edward Bare, a cunning fortune-hunter with a taste for the finer things in life. He's affectionately known as Teddy by his affluent elder wife, Monica, whose life he snuffs out in a carefully orchestrated accident just a year into their marriage. The coroner's conclusion of "accidental death" plays right into Edward's chilling scheme, erasing any suspicion of foul play from his character. However, the fortune he thought he'd inherit crumbles when he learns of a last-minute will, leaving all her wealth to Monica's estranged sister, Dora, residing in far-off Jamaica. Though the will states the money would revert to him upon Dora's demise, Edward finds himself trapped in a mansion without means, under the watchful and distrustful eye of Monica's lawyer, Phillip Mortimer. Desperate, Edward moves on, his predatory sights set on his next unsuspecting victim, the brash and newly rich widow, Freda Jeffries, whom he encounters at a seaside resort. Freda, who amassed her wealth from the sale of her late husband's saloon, is not as naive as Monica. She guards her finances fiercely, making Edward's mission to live a life of luxury on her dime significantly more challenging. Edward's dilemma amplifies as he spends time with Charlotte Young, a woman he assists in securing property for an equestrian school, owing to his prior work as a property broker. Despite his murderous instincts, he knows he can't kill Freda without arousing suspicion. Yet, he's oblivious to the profound impact Charlotte will have on his life, as he remains unaware of a secret she harbors.
