Plot

In the ethereal realm beyond the veil of death, Billy Bigelow, a charismatic carousel barker who has been deceased for fifteen years, finds himself in a celestial predicament. Despite long forsaking his right to revisit Earth, he is now compelled to return as trouble brews in the lives of his wife, Julie Bigelow née Jordan, and their child, a soul he never had the chance to meet. He must first convince the celestial gatekeeper, to whom he unravels the tale of his earthly existence. Billy's life was a dizzying ride, much like the carousel he once commanded. His magnetic charm drew the attention of Julie, leading to an unexpected romance despite their mutual disbelief in love and marriage. Yet, their bond, as paradoxical as it was, resulted in a marriage that spun their worlds out of their usual orbits. This union, however, sparked the ire of Mrs. Mullin, the envious carousel owner who had her eyes set on Billy. Her resentment led to his dismissal, turning Billy's once colorful life into a carousel at a standstill. Without any other job skills and a stubborn refusal to settle for mediocrity, Billy found himself relying on Julie's Aunt Nettie's generosity. When Julie lost her factory job due to late-night escapades with Billy, and shared the news of her pregnancy, Billy's desperation to provide for his family led him down a perilous path. His only option seemed to be the enticing but dangerous world of crime, a path he explored with his old accomplice, Jigger Craigin. This decision spiraled Billy's life out of control, leading to his untimely demise. Now, as he pleads his case to return to Earth, Billy yearns not only to rectify the tribulations plaguing his family but also to convey his true feelings for Julie, an unspoken confession that death had stolen from him. Carousel (1956) is a hauntingly beautiful tale of redemption, love, and the sacrifices one is willing to make in the name of family.
