Caged (1950)

In the grim confines of an Illinois penitentiary, a story of transformation unfolds as 19-year-old Marie Allen, a naive and fearful young woman, is incarcerated for her unwitting role in an armed robbery executed by her deceased husband, Tom. The prison, a seething cauldron of hardened criminals, is under the stewardship of Warden Ruth Benton, an advocate of reform striving to cultivate a more humanistic penal system, a stark contrast to the prevailing cruelty. However, Benton's noble intentions clash with the malicious practices of Evelyn Harper, the matron in charge of Marie's cell block. Harper, a sadistic figure who operates by her own malevolent rules, manipulates the power dynamics within the prison, accepting bribes and ruling her domain with an iron fist.
