In the simmering summer following their high school graduation, Alice Marano and Darlene Davis, inseparable since childhood, yearn for one grand adventure before their lives diverge. Alice, a spirited daredevil from a working-class background, convinces Darlene, an innocent straight-shooter from a more privileged upbringing, to abandon their initial plan of a Hawaiian getaway for an irresistibly inexpensive 11-day trip to the exotic realms of Thailand, a decision kept hidden from Darlene's parents.
