Big Man on Campus (1989)

In the modern retelling of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," the sprawling UCLA campus becomes the stage for an unusual romance. From his makeshift home in a bell tower, an enigmatic hunchback spies on the world below through his scope, his attention riveted by Cathy, a stunning co-ed. When he witnesses her being violently rebuffed while defending her boyfriend, Alex, from an aggressor, the hunchback, driven by an unexpected surge of protectiveness, swings into action, literally, in a daring Tarzan-esque rescue. This audacious act lands him in the custody of campus officials, and under the scrutiny of university professors including Cathy, Alex, and the keen-minded Dr. Webster. However, during a ride back to campus, the hunchback flees, leading the trio on a chase that ends at his secret tower abode. Persuaded by Dr. Webster's belief that the hunchback should remain in his familiar territory, Alex reluctantly agrees to cohabitate with the hunchback. Thus begins a remarkable journey of discovery and adaptation for the hunchback, who adopts the moniker Bob Malooga-Looga-Looga-Looga-Looga. Under the mentorship of Dr. Webster and Dr. Gerard, Bob explores the myriad intricacies of life on Earth. Despite the inevitable clashes and disputes, particularly over Cathy, a unique bond forms between Alex and Bob. However, the tranquility is shattered when Bob receives a false distress call about Cathy. In his attempt to protect her, Bob unwittingly brings the university officials to his doorstep, who are determined to apprehend him for invading the girl's dorm. As the pursuit intensifies, Bob's newfound life hangs in the balance, and an unexpected romance simmers beneath the surface, threatening to alter their lives forever.
