In the twilight of peace, Sam Gifford's world revolves around his thriving southern cotton plantation and his marriage to a colonel's daughter, a life steeped in privilege and arrogance. The onset of war, however, thrusts him into a tumultuous reality. The once high-and-mighty plantation owner finds himself serving as a sergeant in a National Guard unit, a stark contrast to his previous life of grandeur.
