Plot

Betsy Hopper, a quirky fashion student, and Jake Lovell, her conservative investment-banker beau, dream of a small, intimate wedding. But Betsy's father, Eddie, a blue-collar construction contractor from Long Island, feels overshadowed by Jake's affluent WASP parents. His insecurities lead him to transform their modest nuptials into an extravagant spectacle, driving his wife, Lola, into a financial frenzy. The added pressure of integrating their Jewish and Italian-Catholic family traditions into the ceremony only exacerbates Betsy's concerns. Meanwhile, Betsy's older sister, Connie, a police officer, grapples with her own romantic frustrations. Considered single due to her 'unfeminine' career choice, her bitterness towards love is palpable. As Eddie's funds dwindle, swallowed by his ambitious home-building project, he's forced to seek help from his shady brother-in-law, Oscar. This brings an unexpected twist: Stevie Dee, a mild-mannered but ominous mobster, starts overseeing Eddie's construction efforts. To add to the chaos, he sets his romantic sights on the unsuspecting Connie. Amidst the financial turmoil, familial pressures, and unexpected mobster interference, Betsy's simple wedding dream appears more elusive than ever.
