In the quaint corners of 1960s Canada, introverted teenager Stepphy Holliday yearns for a life beyond the dull confines of her small town, where she cares for her alcoholic father George and works at his service station. Despite her seemingly ordinary existence, two young men, her classmate Bennett and the enigmatic Fabian from the local Purple Mist factory, find themselves drawn to her. Stepphy's dreams of stardom find potential wings when she, with the aid of Bennett, qualifies for the first round of the American Ingenue Talent Competition. However, her father's fear of abandonment and the daunting journey to New York cast long shadows on her path to fame. An unexpected twist of fate arrives in the form of her heartthrob, the singing movie star Bobby Shore, whose car breaks down, stranding him and his manager Helmut in Stepphy's small town. Seizing this golden opportunity, Stepphy shifts her focus towards winning Bobby's heart and securing her ticket to the glitz and glamour of show business. Yet, the dream quickly morphs into a potential nightmare when a chemical leak at the Purple Mist factory brings about strange mutations among the townsfolk. Stepphy's dreams of stardom are suddenly overshadowed by this looming threat. Will her dreams be shattered by this unforeseen calamity, or can she rise above it and grasp the stardom she's always desired?
