Ambush (1950)

In the rugged landscape of 1878 Arizona territory, beneath the imposing shadow of Bailey Mountain, lies a treacherous trail to the West. This seemingly innocuous path conceals a deadly secret: it serves as the fortress of the renegade Apache, led by the fearsome Chief Diablito. Their unyielding reign of terror escalates when the renegade Apaches mercilessly massacre a group of unsuspecting land surveyors and abduct Mary Carlyle, the daughter of the esteemed General Carlyle. This vicious act of aggression prompts Major C. E. Breverly, the leader of a nearby cavalry outpost, to seek the assistance of Ward Kinsman. Kinsman, a seasoned prospector and Indian guide, has been clandestinely mining gold under Diablito's very nose. Despite the urgency of the situation and the plea of Mary's sister, the fiercely determined Ann Duverall, Kinsman initially refuses the rescue mission, fearing the casualties that a direct confrontation with the Apache could bring. However, the tides of Kinsman's resolve shift when he finds himself ensnared by Ann's captivating beauty, despite her engagement to Captain Ben Lorrison. Meanwhile, the outpost is fraught with tensions as the illicit affair between Martha Conovan, the wife of the alcoholic cavalryman Tom, and Lt. Linus Delaney stirs a whirlwind of gossip and discord within the ranks. In a twist of fate, Kinsman, leading a small scouting troop, stumbles upon a group of Apache comprised mostly of women and children. The captured prisoners reveal the whereabouts of Diablito's band and confirm that Mary Carlyle remains unharmed. This crucial information triggers a meticulously planned expedition aimed to encircle and apprehend Diablito's renegade band and rescue Mary. The plan is laden with danger and uncertainty: the Apache outnumber the cavalrymen three to one, and the element of surprise is their only advantage. The troops are entrusted with converging on Bailey Mountain from opposite directions, a strategic maneuver designed to cut off Diablito's escape into Mexico. Amidst the arid desert landscapes and the echoes of war drums, the fate of Mary Carlyle hangs in the balance.
