Plot

In the heart-wrenching whirlwind of life and loss, Alice Hyatt, a 35-year-old housewife turned reluctant wanderer, finds her world abruptly shattered by the sudden death of her husband Donald in a tragic work-related accident. Once stifled by fear and the relentless pursuit to please her cold and demanding spouse, Alice now finds herself on a daunting journey of rediscovery, accompanied by her spirited and precocious 11-year old son, Tommy. With a dream and a song in her heart, Alice sets her sights on her hometown of Monterrey, California, the only place where she has ever found genuine happiness. Her hope is to revive her dormant singing career, earning money through scattered gigs and reaching Monterrey before the onset of Tommy's school year. This trek, however, is not without its trials. Each stop along the way demands Alice to step out of her comfort zone, searching for jobs that often leave Tommy to his own devices, fostering his cheeky independence and blurring the lines between mother-son and companion-companion relationships. The path before Alice takes an unexpected detour when they find themselves in Tucson, Arizona, where she grudgingly accepts a waitressing job at Mel and Ruby's Diner. Surrounded by a motley crew of characters, including gruff owner Mel, the sharp-tongued Flo, and the timid Vera, Alice navigates the chaos of her new environment. Yet, amidst the clatter of dishes and the sizzle of the grill, Alice slips back into old patterns: seeking fulfillment and validation from men, specifically the youthful Ben and the humble farmer, David. Alice's journey, though fraught with hardship and heartache, serves as a mirror, reflecting her past mistakes and poor choices, particularly her ill-fitted marriage to Donald. As she grapples with the challenges that come her way, Alice learns to face the music, hopeful that her road to Monterrey will lead not just to a new home, but a newfound sense of self.
