Plot

In the dreary winter of 1939, Switzerland's once welcoming arms are abruptly withdrawn, leaving Jewish refugees isolated and desperate. Despite the stringent border closure, an influx of individuals still dare to cross, their visas void and their hopes hanging by a thread. The unusual surge sparks the curiosity of the Swiss immigration authorities' chief, triggering a meticulous investigation into these illicit crossings. Ambitious and fiercely loyal to his duty, Police Inspector Robert Frei is dispatched to the tranquil canton of St. Gallen. Here, amidst the picturesque landscapes, he uncovers the audacious acts of Paul Gruninger, a man who chooses compassion over conformity. Gruninger, defying the stern commands of his homeland, assists the refugees, forging documents, and smuggling them across the border, propelled by nothing more than sheer humanity. As Frei delves deeper into Gruninger's defiant endeavors, he finds himself torn between duty and morality. The sight of refugees pleading for sanctuary and Gruninger's unyielding resolve to help them, chips away at Frei's staunch belief in authority. He is now caught in a dilemma: uphold his duty and expose Gruninger's actions, or shroud them in silence? 'Akte Grüninger' is a gripping tale of defiance, humanity, and the internal battles one faces when the line between right and wrong blurs.
