Plot

Haunted by the echoes of 1988 Angola, former army officer Sean Raine (Gavin Hood) has traded the battlefield for the courtroom, now a lawyer entrenched in the urban hustle of city life. His existence takes a sharp turn when he stumbles upon a chilling crime scene in the heart of 1998 Zululand. The perpetrator, a young cowherd named Sipho Mbombela (Loyiso Gxwala), wields a bloody hatchet and confesses to a heinous crime - the murder of an infant. As Sean peels back the layers of this shocking case, he uncovers a disturbing belief at its core. Sipho, entrenched in the mysticism of his rural roots, had brutally ended the baby's life under the conviction that he was exterminating the Tikoloshe, a malevolent spirit deeply feared in Southern Africa. The unsettling reality that the innocent child's genitals had been cut off amplifies the horror of the case. Compelled by an inexplicable connection to the boy, Sean finds himself drawn into the case, choosing to defend Sipho. As he delves deeper into the murky world of African witchcraft and superstition, he locks horns with an unyielding client, a disapproving mother, and a stern Judge Wendon (Nigel Hawthorne), who threatens him with contempt. While navigating this complex labyrinth of spiritual beliefs and legalities, Sean also seeks solace and insight from a local witch-doctor, Sangoma Rachel Ndlovu (Nandi Nyembe). He embarks on a quest to not only prove the existence of demonic possession in major religions worldwide, including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, and Islam, but also to unearth the dark secrets buried within himself. "A Reasonable Man" is a gripping tale that thrusts viewers into a world where the boundaries of law, belief, and personal demons blur, forcing them to question the very nature of reason and superstition.
